My entry for the Okami contest (right under the line, as usual). The original image at the specified resolution is 11.1Mb as a png image so this is at reduced size.

This was inspired by a game screenshot I came across where the main character is sitting at the centre of a water lily. It was such a beautiful image, and brought to mind so many other mythological tales of such as Venus rising from an oyster or the babylonian god who was born from an egg, that I knew that was the message I wanted to explore with my submission for this contest!

I've yet to had the opportunity to play this game, despite how utterly wonderful it looks, hence why I really wanted to enter this contest! I love every aspect of the art, style and story of this game that I have thus far been able to come across so I can't wait for any chance to play it personally!

Many, many hours of work went into this thing, and it was a whale of a piece with upwards of 80 (EIGHTY!) layers generated in creating it.

I've been sick as a dog lately with a chest cold and asthma and have had to miss some uni classes, and this image was only finished thanks to four great friends who helped me by giving me some feedback and drive along the way!
:iconcsharpmajor: :iconnii-tan: :iconwild-filly: and nigrescere!

So a big thankyou for all of your wonderful people!

And yes, I love rainbow.

Stock of :iconforsakewolf: was used as reference for the very dynamic pose of the wolf in this image! (it's fabulous stock!).

I really like that image, of the character coming out the lotus like that. I've never played okami, but I'm always impressed by how the fanart it inspires works so well on its own.

Very nice. I came by your gallery to see what your works included when I saw your post on the latest News Article regarding tracing. I don't think anyone could rip this off as well as the original.

Thanks - I'm far more worried about the new copying policy announcements in terms of my original works though - this year I'll be starting to upload a lot more nice pieces because I'm putting together my graduate portfolio as I'm coming to the end of my degree and will be starting to look for professional work - and I'm not well known, so I feel that if someone did copy original works of mine they may quite easily exceed the popularity of the original... and the potential or my work losing impact because someone has seen a copy of it first is something that does worry me - especially as such a copy could well be sanctioned by deviantart policy.

Either way, the new policies are certainly making me uneasy.

The good thing about this is that you can prove you did it first from the upload date. I like to shrink my own images down a bit so I can always prove I was the original for having a super hi-res version, but the sacrifice there is working in really high-res. Whichever route, good luck to you.

Wow, I don't think I saw your final version of this but it is vastly improved! From feeling it had a lot of potential before, I think it is now absolutely beautiful. You should be proud of yourself!

Yay! Yay! Yay! You have an account now, want me to make you an avatar? I could make you up something based off your blossom photos? I'd probably try to make a brush out of it and make an avatar kind of the same style as mine is... or whatever if you want!

And thanks Ros! I was suprised at how well this turned out too! And I'm gonna try and make your whale piece even greater!
Posted the w.i.p. study for some squids on my LJ, because I still have some work to do on it! Ugh, wound up getting so excited about freaking squids (I've been subscribed to a squid blog for almost a year, I do kind of have a thing for them...)

Am feeling very inspired however!

I am proud of myself on this one, especially when I was looking back and seeing the last coloured studies I'd done for your piece, six months ago and how much better my work is now. My skills still need a long way to go, but I'm starting to panic less now. You know, about the fact that I actually need to get a paying job soon...

I should post my uni work up here eventually, been meaning to get around to it, but probably want to make a few small edits to things before I do that, also will probably shift some things from my main gallery to my scraps gallery after I upload some new stuff, because the thought of trying to raise the overall standard of my gallery does excite me a little bit... o.k., a lot. Also, got an awesome new book finally from Amazon about 3 student concep artists developing the tale of "The Skillful Huntsman" a Grimm fairytale, under the guide of their teacher, it's quite fascinating!

And it's a beautiful book, oh the spot varnishes...
That's the great things about design mags and books, they're beautifully created!!!

Oh, it's like porn to me!

Paying jobs can be whatever you can find. I am starting to look at day jobs that would still allow me to do what I love. So I wouldn't sweat it (now finding a day job you LIKE , that is near impossible :)

I shall HAVE to see that book now! Hmmm, illustrator porn is an interesting idea...

Mmmm, freelance is good at least because it's the type of work you can carry with you if you want to wander around somewhere else in the world for a while.
Not working any more while at uni - can't do that with my other commitments and trying to stay relatively sane - but you know, I'm starting to ahve to think about professional work - as in, actually do this as a job.

I mean, I know there are paid illustrators out there way worse than me, and I can probably get about another year of leeway while I'm finishing up my degree before I need to start job-hunting, but you know, I just stress over trying to make sure I'm as prepped as possible for that. I can't let myself just be an 'illustrator' y'know, I want to be a 'super-special-awesome' one. Which is arrogant, you know? But I mean, it's like if you knew that in a year you need to publish poetry or whatever? You know it's published so it may haunt you forever!!!! Plus, you can't go back and re-edit it.
So, that's my stress deal-io.

Yes, it's a great, great book. Actually I have very many a fantastic book now! I'm quite impressed with my library at the moment. And yes, I do own a lot of what I'd consider Illustrator/Design porn. Like the book by John Howe who did the covers for all of Robin Hobb's books, and her ones as Megan Lindholm as well. You'll like his work ^_^ Oh, and he was also the other illustrator apart from Alan Lee to illustrate LoTR, he did that cover with Gandalf on the front, and I think he was a conpcept designer with Alan Lee for the movies.

On a different topic, I love concept illustration - it's such lovely snapshots as opposed to cover illustrations for books and whatnot where everything looks staged and posed for the camera. Concept art is more real and emotional, and much more like street photograhy.

Leeway:
"leeway, n. [lee-wey, lē-wā]
-The technical definition of this word is 'the amount or angle of the drift of a ship to leeward from its heading,' leeward being in the direction of the region of the ship where the wind is blowing. However, leeway is more commonly used to describe some extra time, space, or margin within which one can operate. An example of this would be: "We've got about 15 minutes leeway after landing to catch our second flight." The word appears to have been created between the mid- and late 17th century as a simple compound noun formed from lee and way. Lee is defined as 'a protective shelter, especially from the wind.' The Middle English spelling was le, from Old English hleo, hleow 'shelter, protection.' The Germanic root for this was likely prehistoric Germanic khlewo since we see similar words in other Germanic languages (Old Norse hle, Danish læ, and Dutch lij 'lee, shelter.';) The original meaning of prehistoric Germanic khlewo is uncertain but may have been along the lines of 'warmth,' as it was the ancestor of several words in other languages with similar meanings (German lau 'tepid' and Old Norse hly 'shelter, warmth.';)"

OMG! This is freaking amazing. I love her portrayal as a real looking wolf. I don't see how you could have had the patience for so many layers though, I know I wouldn't and hence now we know one of the reasons why I stink as an artist. But omg, this is gorgeous, I must commend you on your work. Yes I must.

Oh, I only have the patience because I've had my lovely Wacom Intuous Inu for a couple of years now so I'm very used to now things being much quicker and easier than they ever used to be before I got him (and so I do much, much more stuff)! Plus, I just generally use lots of layers - I'm quite the crazy layer fiend.

But yeah, I basically have to do stuff like this all the time for my degree in Design majoring in Illustration anyway, so I benefit from getting a lot of practice -__O compared to other people. Plus, it's easier to get though this type of thing if you have some nice music or PodCasts to listen too, they really help especially when you get into really sludgy, monotonous stages of work.

Thankyou for your compliments! I could never have drawn her not as a real-ish sort of wolf though, as that would be kind of far from my style - and I couldn't even comprehend how those little fur-wings of her worked (and hence she looks llike the Poodle Wolf/Foo Dog).

But yeah, thankyou very much for taking the time to make such a beautiful detailed comment and favouriting my work!

haha thanks. The washing out part was like, the final part I did and I was liek "oh, so that's what this has been missing.... and why I've been banging my head into this desk for the past three days...."
So yes! thankyou very much Niina for commenting! Graaarrrr and now I must start thinking up other awesome ideas to do... which won't happen because I sooooooo don't have the time or sanity to commit to anything as much as this godawful nightmare so they'd all just be laaaaaammmmmmeee -__- but on the plus side, the more time passes the more I start to like this thing so I think it's still a long term win thing in my artistic development... instead of still being to close to it and freaking out over all the little flaws...

Yeah, Hung would probably like it, but I'd never, ever, show it to him because then he'd start expecting all sorts of weird high standards or whatever. And I'm fairly certain he'd probably burst into some weird story about the lotus blossom, and acting like we have a "special bond" because I've drawn something so asian-tastic and talking about lion dogs and all sorts of other weird crap... and overall it would just be kind of "Tegan~! why do you do this! draw more asian like that thing! what is this? a car-wash rag?"
and I'd be like "No! that's my map of Fremantle which only blows so bad because my poor spirit has been smooshed by such horrible horrible mind ruinationing and how can you not understand that I need fresh air to breathe and freedom to create to develop things of any standards of beauty on a superficial level, not just that 'lovely personality' crap!"
and then he'd be all "Tegan, Tegan, Tegan, Let I explain to you..."

So yeah, not really encouraging that. But maybe I think too much into things like that...

ha ha, yeah, when I was a kid and our family lived with my grandparents for a few years, our grandparents had a couple cool fu dogs in their house (not to accidently imply we're chinese, my grandfather had been abroad on business trips and also been to china while in the navy) so I think their style has always been in my head somewhere, trying to get out.

Plus, I was looking at Amaterasu's design and I really was trying to figure out how to make the "fur-wings" work because my brain can't wrap itself around such a concept so I just wound up extrapolating from all the curls already existing in her design. Plus, I blame the fact that we have poodles for being why my brain thinks curls is the natural way for fur to go.

Thankyou for the comment and for the favourite! I am very grateful! Have a nice day~!

ZAH!!!!!!!! Finally it's done! I've been going utterly insane and haven't been able to breathe for the past few days! (but now I can, thanks to super inhaler which has *SUPERDRUGS*) Yay for bronchial inflamation and underlying asthma! (f*ck, really, it's been very non-great) anyway, super super relived it's finally done!!!!

Thanks for the compliment, and yeah, it looks waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyy different from when I showed it to you!!! And yeah, after ... well, I really can't say how many hours I spent on this monstrosity but it's in the over 24 range, and I'm actually very happy with the result!(Well, if you'd asked me 7 or 8 hours ago what I thought I probably would have been in a horrific state of depressive swoon, though now the stress of the great, looming, PST time deadline I'm now relatively saner and am able to look at it objectively now...)

And I guess I'd have to say that of all the pieces in my gallery, this one has probably (hell, well and truly) had the most work put into it and it shows. Plus, it's showing off the fact that (yay!) my skills are gradually increasing. Which is great, because by the end of the year I should be able to do some real specky stuff (and yes, I'll do something for you in the end-of-year holidays if you give me a brief/concept) so, yay.

But yeah, somehow I managed to slip something so utterly rainbow-licious into my relatively mature gallery. Yay for chroma burn!

Oh, yeah, btw! SORRY SORRY! I haven't been able to drop by Ros's stuff yet because of the whole not being able to breathe thing combined with the whole fact that with the not being able to breathe thing meand I haven't been able to go to the city to pick up her thing! But I'm going in tomorrow so I can do that then and get it to you this week end!

ZAHHHHH! I'm so sorry!

Heh, don't worry about the package too much - I've been up to my elbows in equity law for the last week and a bit, so I haven't sent it off, or even really thought about sending it. Or indeed thought much at all. I hate exams, I truly do. My right hand's sending me its expressions of innermost loathing as well. I'll see you sometime this weekend then! My exam is on Saturday morning -_-
