A Midnight Dreary

Description

"Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore,"

The Raven - Edgar Allan Poe

I’m really not fond of this piece. I quite like some of the ideas (especially a Mister Gulliver Hobbes who found his way in there), but I abhor my own execution of it – it was a rush job, and it sure as hell shows.
Nonetheless, have to post it regardless in order to improve. I’ll also be reworking the whole image for my portfolio, so I’ll hopefully be improving the composition, perspective, lighting (oh lighting, how painful a part you are for me) and just generally structuring the scene better and not making cop-outs like having so much of the rest of the room left undecided, and the bench top at the front entirely out of view.
So, in summation, it would be very helpful if anyone felt like leaving a comment with suggestions, tips, links to redlines pulling apart to horrific shortcomings of this as an image...

Yes, I know 2009 is evidently not a year in which I stop saying This Sucks and I’m a Horrible Illustrator.

I actually really like this piece... at least, I love the ideas that you've got going, and it has a lot of potential to be truly awesome ^^

The foreground seems a bit cluttered - there's a bit too much happening at once, what with the cat and the candles both vying for attention. Maybe you could push the nearest candle more to the right and further forwards, so that you get more of a lens flare and the suggestion that another candle is nearby - makes the atmosphere a bit more engaging, as if you're actually sitting there.

Are the two candle fittings in the background on the same level, or is the one on the left a bit lower? Might just be my eyes on that one - they're tricksy things nowadays...

That's the best commentary I can offer at the moment - hope it's helpful! ^^
